Entrances

Park Güell in Barcelona has three main entrances:

Accessibility

Staff recommend entering through the Carretera del Carmel, which offers a flatter landscape and dedicated parking spaces for authorized vehicles.

The tourist information center provides a free wheelchair loan service upon prior request to help guests navigate the designated accessible routes. Hypostyle Room

The Sala Hipóstila functions as a grand architectural forest composed of 86 fluted stone columns. Originally intended to serve as a marketplace for a residential estate, this hall demonstrates Gaudí’s mastery of structural integrity and neoclassical influence.

The ceiling features small circular mosaics, or rosasses, created by Josep Maria Jujol, which contrast with the heavy Doric columns. The outer pillars lean inward to support the weight of the Nature Square located directly above, showing a sophisticated understanding of gravity and pressure.

The Square

The Park Güell square, officially known as the Plaça de la Natura, serves as the expansive heart of the monumental area. Originally designed as an open-air theater for community performances, this large esplanade rests on the columns of the Hypostyle Room.

The unpaved surface allows for natural water drainage, reflecting Gaudí’s commitment to ecological sustainability. From this vantage point, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the Barcelona skyline and the Mediterranean Sea, framed by the colorful serpentine bench.

The Bench

The Park Güell bench lines the perimeter of the Nature Square, winding like a giant serpent through the open space. This ergonomic seat features colorful ceramic fragments applied through the trencadís method, creating a vibrant collage of discarded tiles and glass.

Gaudí designed the bench's curves to fit the human form, ensuring comfort for those who sit to enjoy the views. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the bench acts as a structural railing and a complex drainage system that filters rainwater into a cistern below.

Gaudí House Museum

The Gaudí House Museum, or Casa-Museu Gaudí, provides insight into the personal life of the renowned architect. Gaudí resided in this building for nearly twenty years, from 1906 to 1925, before moving to the Sagrada Familia workshop.

The house displays a collection of furniture, drawings, and personal belongings designed by the artist and his collaborators. Hill of the Three Crosses

Gaudí constructed this stone monument, inspired by prehistoric structures, on the spot where he originally planned to build a chapel. Three stone crosses crown the peak, two of which point toward the cardinal directions, while the third is shaped like an arrow.

To reach the summit, travelers climb a series of stone steps built directly into the hillside. This location provides a vertical perspective of the park's layout and remains a favored spot for watching the sunset over the urban landscape of Barcelona.
